How the PSLE AL system works

Since 2021, MOE grades each of the four compulsory PSLE subjects on an Achievement Level scale from AL1 (best) to AL8. Your child's aggregate PSLE score is simply the sum of those four ALs — so the lowest possible total is 4 (AL1 in every subject) and the highest is 32.

The aggregate score determines which secondary school posting band your child is eligible for. Schools publish their previous year's indicative cut-off range, but these change annually with cohort performance, so the only reliable source is MOE SchoolFinder.

Want to help your child reach AL1 or AL2? Our PSLE tuition page explains how HomeAiTutor combines a 24/7 AI tutor for daily practice with a matched human tutor who knows the marking scheme. Explore tuition by subject: Primary English, Primary Maths, Primary Science and Primary Chinese.

PSLE AL system — frequently asked questions

What is the PSLE Achievement Level (AL) system?

The AL system replaced the T-score system in 2021. Each of the four compulsory PSLE subjects — English Language, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue Language — is graded AL1 to AL8, where AL1 is the highest and AL8 is the lowest. Your child's aggregate PSLE score is the sum of all four ALs (range 4–32). A lower score is better.

How is the PSLE aggregate score calculated?

Add the four individual AL grades together: English AL + Maths AL + Science AL + Mother Tongue AL = PSLE aggregate (4–32). For example, AL2 + AL2 + AL3 + AL2 = 9. This calculator does that arithmetic instantly.

What does each AL band mean?

AL1 corresponds to 90–100 marks, AL2 to 85–89, AL3 to 80–84, AL4 to 75–79, AL5 to 65–74, AL6 to 45–64, AL7 to 20–44, and AL8 to below 20. These are MOE's published bands. A student who scores 90+ in every subject achieves the best possible aggregate of 4.

What aggregate score do I need to get into a particular school?

MOE publishes the previous year's school cut-off ranges every December via the SchoolFinder tool at moe.gov.sg. Cut-off points change each year based on cohort performance, so we do not publish specific figures. Use MOE's official SchoolFinder for current data.

My child studies Foundation Maths or Foundation Mother Tongue — how does that work?

Foundation subjects are graded separately (A, B, C, D) rather than AL1–AL8, and they affect secondary school options differently. This calculator covers Standard subjects only. Refer to MOE's official PSLE information for Foundation subject guidance.

How can HomeAiTutor help my child improve their PSLE AL grades?

HomeAiTutor pairs a 24/7 AI tutor — for unlimited syllabus-aligned practice across English, Maths, Science and Mother Tongue — with a vetted human tutor who knows the PSLE marking scheme. Consistent practice on the right question types is the most reliable way to move up an AL band.
