How the A-Level UAS works
Singapore's public universities use the University Admission Score (UAS) — a rank-point aggregate out of 90 — as one of the key criteria for A-Level applicants in the annual university admissions exercise. The UAS is computed from six components:
- Best 3 H2 subjects — up to 20 rank points each (total 60)
- H1 subject (contrasting subject or H1 Mother Tongue Language) — up to 10 pts
- General Paper (H1) — up to 10 pts
- Project Work (H1) — up to 10 pts
H2 subjects carry higher weight because the mark-to-rank-point conversion is twice as steep as for H1. Every grade band matters: moving from B to A in a single H2 subject adds 2.5 rank points. Students taking H1 Knowledge & Inquiry (KI) instead of General Paper use their KI grade in place of the GP component.
The UAS is one factor among several. Universities also consider subject prerequisites (for example, H2 Chemistry for medicine), portfolio, interview and aptitude tests for specific courses. Always check the official entry requirements for the course you are applying to.

A-Level UAS — frequently asked questions
What is the University Admission Score (UAS)?
The UAS is the aggregate used by Singapore's public universities (NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD, SIT, SUSS) to assess A-Level applicants. It is computed from rank points assigned to each grade in your A-Level subjects, with a maximum of 90. Higher is better. The UAS is not the only factor — universities also consider interview performance, portfolio, subject prerequisites and other criteria for many courses.
How is the UAS calculated?
Your UAS is the sum of rank points for your best three H2 subjects (maximum 20 points each = 60 points), plus your H1 contrasting subject or H1 Mother Tongue Language (maximum 10 points), plus General Paper H1 (maximum 10 points), plus Project Work H1 (maximum 10 points). Total maximum = 90. H2 grades: A=20, B=17.5, C=15, D=12.5, E=10, S=5, U=0. H1 grades: A=10, B=8.75, C=7.5, D=6.25, E=5, U=0.
What is the S grade for H2 subjects?
The S (Subpass) grade is awarded for H2 subjects and carries 5 rank points. It indicates a performance below the E grade threshold but above U. An S grade does not count as a pass for most university course prerequisites — it carries rank points for UAS computation only. H1 subjects do not have an S grade; they are graded A to E or U.
Does Mother Tongue Language (MTL) count towards UAS?
Higher MTL (taken at H1 level) is included in the UAS as the H1 contrasting/MTL component, contributing up to 10 rank points. Students who took H2 Mother Tongue Language and Literature use it as one of their three H2 subjects instead. Students who have been exempted from MTL by MOE may have their best H1 subject count in its place — check MOE's admissions guidelines for your specific situation.
What UAS do I need for a specific university course?
Minimum entry requirements and actual course cut-off UAS scores vary by university, faculty and year of intake. We do not publish specific cut-off UAS figures as they change each admissions cycle. For accurate, current data check the official admissions portals: NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD, SIT and SUSS each publish their minimum entry requirements and past intake profiles.
